Photography is Like Making Spaghetti

June 8, 2009
Making Spaghetti

Making Spaghetti

Your hand squeezes each plump, red tomato attempting to find just the perfect texture.

The bold, green color of bell pepper catches your eye next as you begin selecting the ingredients for a meal that’s sure to please. Each item must be chosen with most careful scrutiny in order for your creation to become a masterpiece of culinary delight.

But this is just the start.

Anticipation grows on the drive home with your precious cargo. You eagerly await the preparation which comes next. You imagine yourself carefully peeling away the parts that aren’t needed until just the very best remains. Each part must hold it’s own for the final feast to please. The kitchen is filled with excitement as the aromas begin to tease.

From all of your gathering of ingredients, preparation, and artful assembly a spaghetti dinner has been created! Friends and family can now enjoy.

So how in the world is photography like that?

Rather than just tell you outright, permit me to share a little story and see if you can find a similarity.

The park is filled with magnificent colors. The sweet scent of fragrant flowers is in the air. You can hear the shrill sound of the blue jay, off just a bit in the distance, near I expect to where the small but sparkling waterfall meets the pooling waters below.

You know you have found the perfect spot to gather photos. The beautiful flower colors beg to be taken home. The unique textures on the rock wall and the shadows they form would be great to show your friends. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a shot of the beautiful blue jay as he sweeps by in pursuit of his next meal. It’s like being in paradise, again.

I say again because at least once a week, I head out, camera in hand to gather the wonders of nature on film. It’s a great chance to look for, enjoy, and appreciate all the magical things that surround us every day, but often go unnotice in our hustle and bustle lives.

Each week I  gather the visual ingredients that will make for great photographs to share with friends and family…and everyone here at this blog. But the process of creating great photographs just begins in the camera. There are so many ways to prepare them later, just as there are hundreds of ways to prepare tomatoes. One outcome may be quite different from another.

On my journey home from the park, I begin to imagine just how I will use my digital photo editing software, in my case Photoshop, to careful craft the final images. Digital editing is the equivalent of cutting the veggies to make a fine spaghetti sauce. Only in photography we’re preparing pixels.

Once “cut and washed” until sparkling clean and clear, the final image you will see nears completion. Perhaps I’ll pick a nice frame just as you would settle your fine spaghetti into one of your best dishes for presentation.

You gather and you prepare, savoring each step as you go.

That is exactly how photography is like making spaghetti. A few hours spent immersed in the enjoyable adventure of creating something grand to share.

However there is one critical difference I should make you aware of. Photography will never put one pound on your body, no matter how often you partake.

In fact, when you follow the  program I suggest on this blog, you can actually find yourself losing weight! And having a great time doing it!

Spaghetti on the other hand?

…Hmmm?

tA Brighter Dawn

A Brighter Dawn

Today I want to share an inspirational video with you.

It’s a very moving story of someone who pressed on despite her obvious “handicaps”.

Someone who pressed on, determined to follow her dream, though from all outward appearances she was ill suited for the lofty dream she held in her heart.

But she had two things going for her that would not allow her to fail. Her persistance and her talent.

Most of us have talent, at one thing or another. Most of us lack persistence.

One of my talents and passions happens to be photography. But I let that talent lie dormant for a great many years. Only recently did I decide that I must share my skills and abilities so that others might discover the many great benefits of photography – better health, greater wealth, and wisdom.

Take a look at this inspirational video of Susan Boyle (below) . If after watching it you DECIDE that your dream involves taking up a camera to create wonderfully stunning images of the magnificent world in which we live, or if you want to capture the innocent smiles of children as they play, or pets as they always amuse us, come on back here and read through the posts.

Check out the helpful resources in the sidebar. Everything here is built and tested for helping you to pursue your dream. Photography can inspire your life in ways you could never imagine.

Let the sun rise on your dreams today, just as it did for Susan.

To borrow the words of a great American, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,

” I have a dream!”

And I’m living it, and sharing it with you. Let’s all be inspired by Susan. Let’s dust of our dreams, pick up our cameras (if that’s your passion too) and share our gifts with the world. If you won’t do it for yourself, please do it for us! Please, please  surprise us (or someone!) today with your special, secret talent.

Welcome Garden

Welcome Garden

I’ve been on quite a run of articles lately that focus on making money from doing something fun… Photography.

Today, I’m just going to write a short note on another topic which might not have direct money- making applications, but will certainly make you wiser.

As a regular reader you know that I try to keep this blog touching on the many ways photography can improve your life…make you healthier, weathier and wiser.  Rather than try to get real specific and deep into topics, I plant the seeds of opportunity and offer links to the appropriate resources (at the right side of this page) where you can go to get all the details , right from the experts on that topic.

One of the things I love about digital photography over film is that you can have so much more creative control over the finished print. While trying to get the photo correct right out of the camera is my ultimate goal, I must admit I haven’t yet achieved that level of nirvana yet. And so I am thrilled that programs like Photoshop exist to let me hide some of the flaws.

Beyond that, I love the fact that I can add so much more creativity to scenes that might otherwise be called so-so.

An area that was particularly bothersome to me was seeing a beautiful subject to photograph but not being able to do it justice because the background looked like crap. People, lightpoles, street signs, garbage cans, cars, buildings, and generally too much clutter!

In my quest to eliminate all the junk (and technical errors) from my photos, I found I was getting quite an education on Photoshop. Lots of cool stuff from folks across the net. I started jotting down notes on all the cool techniques I was learning (because I have a devil of a time remembering!).

Next thing I knew I had a whole box of index cards documenting wonderful ways to make your photos look really amazing. Like the 3-D photo shown here of the Welcome Garden. You see a great picture here, but before it became this, it was a clutter.

I wanted to share these tips with my readers (you!) but didn’t feel this was the appropriate spot. So, if you like what you see here and would like to learn more, click over to my new site, dedicated to Photoshop Tips at:

Copy This Orchestra for BIG Photography Profits

December 20, 2008
Doggy Basket

Doggy Basket

Last night I attended an amazing holiday production by the
Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Now most people think nice classical music (or boring!) when you mention going to the symphony. Being a holiday presentation tends to worsen their regard since they already know all the songs.

Not too exciting they imagine.

But nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to the spectacular show put on by this talented group of musicians. And that’s where the lesson begins that can teach (or remind) photographers an awful lot about achievingtheir maximum potential.

Most “normal” orchestral events differ very little from listening to music on a CD except for the ticket price and the polite applause heard between songs. You watch a sedate group of musicians sit and play for hours on a rather stark stage. In my estimation, a 90% auditory experience coupled with a 10% visual experience. If that style of performance has changed in 300 years, it’s not by much.

Therein lies the problem. We live in a society raised on television. We’re a visual society now more than ever. More than any other time in history we want, ney expect, excitement to come blasting in through our eyeballs MTV knew that. And now it seems there can be no stopping the proliferation of YouTube style videos that are popping up at a phenomenal rate. (see the trend?)

Million dollar opportunities spring from nowhere when you include visual stimulus in either your product or its presentation.

We demand visual excitement in our lives.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra has rocked up the old Christmas standards. Athletic performers of boundless energy playing electric guitars and violins to songs like “O Holy Night” rock the house. You get keyboards and rockin’ drum solos set to a laser and pyrotechnic light show that rivals the biggest
names in rock-n-roll history. They get it.

They saw the trend to visual 10 years ago and took action – building a touring group that plays to sold out venues everywhere. Their great show is easily 50-50 in terms of visual to auditory. Half great sound, half great visual show. They added excitement to their music in a very visual way and now reap mega-millions annually for their intelligence

And that’s what we need to do as photographers. Add excitement!

While there is still a place for the standard portrait, there is an even greater opportunity for photos that excite. Photos that people get all hyped up.Photos that people can’t wait to show and tell their friends about.

Photos with that “WOW!” factor.

And now, thanks to SV, a master of photography techniques and marketing, ANY photographer, amateur or pro, can add the equivalent of a rock band’s light show to their photographs.

SV has created a unique way to add extreme visual excitement to your photographs.Best of all, it’s simple and easy. He has a great way of showing you how, and, no surprise, he uses FREE videos to let you in on his secrets.

Turning Photos into Cash

September 11, 2008
Happy Hamster Sells!

Happy Hamster Sells!

If you’re like most people who get the photo bug, you start taking pictures because it’s just plain fun.

Nostalgia. When you come across something beautiful, or something wonderful, or something fun you want it to last forever.

Snap! Got it. Now, with picture in hand, you can feel that same feeling over and over again. Flip out the picture…ahh, you feel great again.

Where would we be without our photo memories!

But just think how great it would be if someone were
actually PAYING you to capture photos of beautiful, wonderful
or just plain fun things?
What if your photos could get published in print for all the world to see, to share the joy along with you?

What if you could win awards, prizes, cash?

Suddenly, photography is a whole lot more than FUN.
It’s FUN-TASTIC!

Well, surprise!

Millions of dollars are paid to photographers every year.

Not just professional photographers, but average Joes and Janes too.

Best of all, you can start right in your own home town.

Shelly Perry of AWAI’s “Turn Your Pictures Into Cash” instructional program is getting regular checks from stock photo agencies for pictures she took of her family “doing things” and such simple things as “curtains”.

Rich Wagner has made multiple thousands from a small town picture of a “pumpkin patch”. Cows sell well too.

I can’t do justice describing their stories here in this limited space, but if this sounds interesting to you, and you can take a simple picture, you should go directly to the AWAI website now for more information:

www.thephotographerslife.com/ph2/rs

Meanwhile, if your going to take pictures anyway, a few of your best subjects will be:

People Portraits, Pet Portraits, Photos of News Stories in Progress (fires, car crashes, local topics of the day), Publicity or products for a business, or ebay products.

Where can I sell my photos?
Who’s buying?

Families, Grandparents, Pet Owners, Businesses, Media, Newspapers, Magazines and Websites, Stock Photo Agencies all are happy to pay you for the type of photo that interests them. Sell at flea markets and art shows too.

Don’t worry about being a pro. Well focused, well composed, well lit pictures that tell the story or communicate the emotion are all that is required. Not some fancy artistical interpretation all blown up with special effects.

Good useful pictures sell.

Photographs as artistic Interpretation on the other hand…now that’s a tough sell.

Check out the AWAI website. You can get ideas for 101 Things You Can Get Paid to Photograph.
Even if the program is not for you there are loads of great tips to be found… for FREE!

And YES! I recommend it because I bought it and have made money because of it. I’ll bet you can too.

You can be fit as a fiddle, with a mind sharp as a tack, but if you have no money to do the things
you love, you’re simply not living life to the fullest. You’re not complete.

But you can have everything you want…physical, mental and financial health.

Your camera and photography… are the keys to the kingdom!

Time for Life Changing Photography

September 10, 2008
Time for Change

Time for Change

It has changed the lives of millions over the years …now it’s your turn!

Remember, it’s not a drug. Not a pill of any kind or a nasty tasting liquid. It’s not an herb or potion or anything you have put in your mouth (or anywhere else inside your body for that matter).

Yet it has a proven chemical effect on the brain – stimulating the hypothalamus in our bodies to naturally produce more dopamine. In scientific studies, increased dopamine (a naturally produced hormone and neurotransmitter) has been linked to:

Increased Motivation – Gets you up and gets you going!
Increased Muscle Control – Hey, seniors…Anyone can do this!
(in fact dopamine depletion is the hallmark of Parkinson’s disease)
Increased Pleasure Sensation – You’ve earned a little fun time, right?
Increased Libido – When you feel good, well…
Increased Decision-Making Power – Clarity of thought returns!
Increased Sociability – Gets you out more, makin’ friends!

All the while you’re building new neuron pathways – as you learn and become more aware of the hidden beauty in the world around you and also as you learn and master more technical skills in photography.
Researcher are studying just how building new neuron pathways might ultimately help fend of the dreaded Alzheimer’s disease!

I know, I know! It’s amazing!

Now you know some of the secret reasons why millions of people love photography! I’ll bet even some long time photographers never thought about WHY they enjoy it so much.

Turns out…

Photography is like a drug!

…With no serious side effects!

Now it’s your turn. Digital technology has made it so much easier for everyone to get involved because these new automatic digital cameras give everyone a tremendous boost up in the quality of the pictures they take. (of course CAMERAS don’t take good pictures…PEOPLE do!)

Everyone can begin turning out photographs that will WOW! their friends by simply using a few of the tips outlined in my previous posts.

“Jump-start every day with an excitement and enthusiasm you haven’t experienced in years!”

Life takes on new meaning from the very moment you begin! The results are instantly gratifying. You’ll bolt out of bed, bursting with energy, bright and early each morning. Then, after launching your day with a healthy start, you’ll be able to sleep like a baby the following night. With no chemical side effects!

Mental focus improves – Dramatically! You’ll find yourself concentrating more on the happiest and most beautiful things in your world. Hours slip by – with not a single negative thought to bring you down. You’ll actually smile a lot.

Stress, nagging pains and ailments magically disappear! No thoughts of pain or discomfort. You’ll find you can bend, stretch and move like a hell bent kid on a playground. You’ll be amazed at how much your pain is caused by thinking about it. When you take your mind off your pain (or troubles) and FOCUS on something else intensely as you frame it in your viewfinder, magically your pain will disappear!

It’s the perfect spice for every interest! If you already have a hobby that gives your life meaning and keeps you busy, this can be the salt and pepper that really brings out the flavor of what it is you do. And a great way to share and show off your interests to friends, family, and dare I say, the buying public.

In my next post, we’ll look at how you can use photography to help pay for itself as well as your other hobbies.

Until then…Grab your camera and get out there!

It’s a fitness machine that helps you lose weight. It’s the “drug” of choice for feeling great with no side effects…it’s the cure for depression, anxiety, worry and pain, it’s your ticket to a life-changing adventure…

Now available without a prescription!

It’s your camera folks! It’s photography.

Be well!

PS: I’d love to hear your comments on how photography has made your life better – mentally, physically, financially. I’m doing research for a new book due out in October and I’d love to include your stories. If I use your story, of course I’ll give you a FREE copy of my book!

Better Photos for Weight Loss

September 10, 2008
Delaware Park Rose Garden

Delaware Park Rose Garden

OK.

You’ve got the camera and you know you’ve got to get out and use it…
if you want to lose it. Pounds that is. Like most fitness equipment, the only time it provides a benefit is when you use it.

Heading out, camera in hand can give you a great cardio workout,
perhaps what will seem like the fastest hour of exercise you ever had.

So let’s get started.

Before heading out, you need to have a subject. A purpose. A focal point.
A good photo outing, like a good photo, must have a singular point of interest.

To wander around aimlessly has it’s place, but as motivation to action it won’t work here. So decide where you want to go, (we discussed 3 options in the last post…the city, the beach or waterfront, or the park) pick one and go.

Once there you can begin your walk in search of great photographic subjects.

Keep in mind these secret photographer’s tricks to achieving really great shots:

1. Rule of Thirds: Imagine your view screen is cut by 2 lines vertically and 2 horizontally, creating 9 equal squares on your viewfinder. Always try to place the main subject of your photo along on of those horizontal or vertical lines. Avoid placing your subjects directly in the center box. You’ll see an instant improvement in your photographic skills.

2. Contrast: Light against dark or vise versa.

2a. Color Contrast: Imagine the color wheel (or better yet, get one) to see which colors are opposite on the wheel. Try to find subjects together that are opposite on the wheel for maximum visual interest (contrast).

3. Angles: Try to create a diagonal through your photos with streets, or grassy edges or buildings, fences or any natural element. Start it from the lower left corner of your viewer in towards the center of your photo. This helps to draw the eyes into and toward your subject. (See todays photo taken with a Nikon D40)

4. Focus: A couple of points here. Eyes should always be sharply in focus when photographing people or animals. To have your subject stand out from the background, blur the background by using a large lens opening on (D)SLR cameras (that means a small f number like f4.5 rather than f8 or f16).

Below are a list of subjects to look for. If you browse through magazines, retail stores or anywhere pictures are found, you will find that these are the most popular things that people like to look at. (if your interested
in the types of photographs that sell…send me an email)

Flowers, trees, gardens, garden paths, butterflies, stone walls, architecture colorful umbrellas, sea shells, fountains, statues, pets, animals, birds, reflections from puddles, windows, lakes, ponds, farmer’s markets, countryside, cows, horses, tractors, kids, couples, doors, churches, clocks.

Get out, look around with purpose and you’ll begin to see a whole new world reveal itself to you.

I guarantee once you get out there, you’ll be hooked!

Once you get home to look at the photographs you took, you’ll be like a kid on Christmas eve…eager for the new morning so you can get back out there again to capture more of the beauty that surrounds us.

All the while burnin’ calories without the dreaded…”exercise”.
Try to get that excited about your treadmill.

3 Fun Ways To Burn 432 Calories per Hour

September 8, 2008
The Buffalo Main Lighthouse

The Buffalo Main Lighthouse

Let’s say for the sake of argument that you want to lose a bit of weight.

But you’re not really sold on dancing with the TV screen for 30 minutes
or pedaling your exercise bike off to nowhere, or jumping on the treadmill
to walk on endlessly like some animal.

Here’s a better way to burn up to 432 calories per hour and have fun
while your doing it.

You only need one lightweight piece of equipment and I’d bet most have one.
It’s a camera. Yes, a surprisingly effective piece of fitness equipment with two
amazing benefits:

1: It gives you something fun to do while your body is getting healthy activity.
(You can exercise longer when your brain is not bored)
2: When you’ve finished “exercising” you have immediate results.
(No, 10 lbs will not have dropped from your body, but you will have
something cool (pictures) to show off while your body does it’s slow but steady thing)

Either film or digital will work. However, if you’re going to get the most from this
“exercise” program, digital will work better because you can take an unlimited
amount of pictures without adding any expense.

If you’re using film, the benefit to you will be you’ll have to be more selective in
what you photograph. That’s good because you may have to walk more to
obtain an interesting shot.

How much better to actually DO something that can give you an amazing result
when you’re finished than to just go through the motions of exercise?

Here’s the secret. For an average individual weighing 160 lbs. hiking for one
hour will burn 432 calories. For our purposes, hiking would mean a combination
of uphill walking, downhill walking, and walking over uneven terrain. You won’t actually
have to head for the mountains or hack through any thick jungle vines.

Here are three places I would recommend. A neighborhood park. The waterfront.
The urban jungle.

Get up tomorrow morning, have a light breakfast and head out. Walk there if it’s close,
or in my case I always had to get into the car and drive there. Now, step out. Start right in
and look for things as you walk that would make for a great photograph. Something
interesting that you think your friends, neighbors, spouse or children would like to see.

Look around, see things as you’ve never seen them before. Capture those sights
with your camera as you walk around for just one hour. Time will go so fast as you
are preoccupied with looking for things – that you’ll wish you had more time (or film) for another hour.

This “exercise” will have you feeling so good for several reasons:

1. You got in an hours worth of exercise-burning up to 432 calories
2. Mentally, your mind is clearer because you DID something and
because what you did was not only physical but involved your brain
as you looked at the world around you. Mental and physical fitness.
3. You have the immediate benefit of the pictures that you took.
Your exercise has produced immediately results in the form of
cool photographs to show, and you didn’t even notice that
you burned the calories. This will show nicely as a shapelier you
when you continue with this fun program over the course of a week.

Quick tips: Sunrise is actually one of the best time for taking photographs because the
sun has not yet begun to cast shadows. The light is most even and colorful
without becoming too bright.

At the waterfront you can capture birds in flight, boats, lighthouses, or if the
beach seashells in the sand, your own footprints, interesting driftwood.

In the city you can photograph the buildings from all different angles, interesting
doorways and architectural details. Walk stairs up into a parking ramp and view
the city from a new perspective. Scultures, statues and water fountains, and
gardens make interesting shots as well.

In the parks look for animals, interesting tree formations, butterflies, kids playing.
Look for colorful flowers, insects up close. Playground equipment when viewed from
strange angles can often be very interesting. Use your imagination.

If your area is more walking than hike, don’t fret. Simple walking will burn over 200 calories
per hour. Walk a little faster or as you’re taking photos bend, stretch and move your body
more and you’ll increase the burn naturally, without even noticing.

Try to get out at least 2-3 times this week and see how much better you feel. You’ll begin to
look forward to exercising rather than dreading it.

Behold the camera…our secret weapon for better physical fitness, mental health and added income.
